Broward Housing Solutions Hosts 'Key to Stability' Breakfast

Broward Housing Solutions will celebrate the success of its residents with a "Key to Stability" breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 6 at Signature Grand, 6900 State Road 84 in Davie. Advance RSVPs are required.

"We're excited to showcase the success of our residents who suffer from severe and persistent mental illness," said Lisa A. Vecchi, CEO of Broward Housing Solutions. "Because we provide affordable housing, our residents are able to focus on maintaining their mental stability, which is critical to living productively in society. Without the worry of finding affordable housing, these folks, many who are formerly homeless, can truly find joy in living."

Several residents will speak at the breakfast to share their mental health challenges as well as their successes since finding stable housing. Additional residents will share their stories via video, as the organization's new video premieres. John L., who lives in a Broward Housing Solutions' apartment with his niece, shares his personal story on the video.

"Broward Housing Solutions offers a hand up, not a hand out," John L. said. "If it weren't for Broward Housing, we'd be in a pretty desperate situation."

The mission of Broward Housing Solutions, founded in 1993, is to provide quality, permanent and affordable housing opportunities to meet the needs of lower income or homeless persons with disabilities who also have a mental illness.

Since inception, Broward Housing Solutions, a Certified Housing Development Organization (CHDO), has built or acquired and renovated 156 units on 33 sites across Broward County. The organization currently owns and maintains 94 rental units with 259 tenants in various locations from Coral Springs to Hollywood. They include one, two and three bedroom apartments located near transportation routes, shopping areas and promote independent community living. Rent charged to tenants is only 30 percent of the consumer's gross monthly income. For example, a resident who receives a $674 Social Security check has a rent payment of only $202 per month.

Broward Housing Solutions provides housing through its Rental Housing Program, assists with rent payments through its Rental Subsidy Program, provides housing to aged-out foster adults through its Housing Solutions for Young Adults program and helps consumers become homeowners through its Lease-to-Buy program.

Since 1993, Broward Housing Solutions has raised more than $18 million in contract funding, grants and fundraising activities from a variety of government and private sources including the Florida Department of Children & Families (DCF), Broward County, United Way of Broward County, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Community Foundation of Broward County, Wasie Foundation, financial institutions, foundations and private donors.
