Broward Housing Solutions® Receives $2,000 Grant

Elaine Vasquez and Linda Carter from Community FoundationBroward Housing Solutions® recently received $2,000 from the Erwin M. Vasquez, M.D. and Elaine Vasquez Family Foundation Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward for its “Rental Housing for Seniors 55+” program.  The Fund was established by Elaine and the late Dr. Erwin Vasquez, in honor of Doctors Natalie A. and Oscar Nadeau who were committed to and passionate about improving the lives of elderly citizens.

Broward Housing Solutions® will use this grant to provide rental subsidies for elderly tenants, fulfilling its mission to provide affordable housing to Broward County's mental health consumers. Mental health consumers age 55+ are one of the most underserved andgrowing populations in our country. Many of these elderly tenants would not beable to independently afford adequate housing because of the current affordablehousing crisis in the area.  If it weren't for Broward Housing Solutions®,there is a strong likelihood that theseindividuals would end up homeless and living on the streets. Qualified low income mental health consumers, those diagnosed with SPMI and age 55+, come to Broward Housing Solutions® after being referred by community mental health providers. The providers continue case management services to ensure that consumers stay on the road to recovery and wellness.

“On behalf of our organization and its board of directors, I’d like to thank the Vasquez family and the Community Foundation of Broward,” said Lisa Vecchi, President/CEO of Broward Housing Solutions.  “It’s refreshing that the Vasquez family and the Community Foundation recognizes pressing needs  – in this case, affordable housing for seniors with mental illness – and promptly reaches out and provides grants to fill the gap.  We thank them for their continued support.”

Since 2004, the Community Foundation of Broward has generously provided more than $88,000 in grants to Broward Housing Solutions including $8,440 in 2010 alone.

“Affordable housing is a cornerstone of a diverse and vital community, particularly for seniors and those with special needs,” said Linda Carter, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Broward. “We are proud to support Broward Housing Solutions and its efforts to address an acute need in Broward County.”
