Volunteers Commemorate MLK Day by Painting Broward Housing Solutions’ Apartments
In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, 50 volunteers put on work clothes, pulled out their drip cloths, and grabbed their paint brushes to spruce up the homes of approximately 60 mental health consumers. The volunteers, who were brought together by Volunteer Broward, painted the exteriors of three apartment buildings managed by Broward Housing Solutions, which provides affordable housing to this vulnerable population.
“For people with severe and persistent mental illness, like those we serve, it’s important to have a safe, clean and bright environment to maintain wellness and stability,” said Lisa Vecchi, Broward Housing Solutions’ President/CEO. “We work very hard to provide excellent housing, and we’re so thankful these generous volunteers stood beside us our efforts. Many, many thanks to them and to Volunteer Broward.”
The apartment complex, Idylwoods of Fort Lauderdale, is one of multiple Broward Housing properties in Broward County that offer permanent supportive housing to allow clients to live independently. Permanent supportive housing enables residents to live independently by paying no more than 30 percent of their gross monthly income for rent. These apartment and townhouse units are accessible to public transportation, shopping, employment opportunities and services. Based on the tenant’s housing needs, one, two and three bedroom properties are available in various cities. Affordability is maintained through rental subsidies up to the allowable rent which are supplemented through Rental Housing Program grants.
